Origins of Halloween

Halloween is believed to have its origins about 2,000 years ago in the northeastern area of Europe, most notably in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The Celtic people living in those regions believed that October 31st was the eve of their new year. They held sacred rituals to celebrate the upcoming year.  These celebrations were known as Samhain.

The Celts believed that on this night, the dead could return to earth and could potentially create havoc. They believed that their Druids (priest) could communicate with the spirits to determine what was ahead in the coming year and in particular what to expect through the harsh winter that was to come.

The Celts would select animals they felt would not survive the coming winter and along with crops from the harvest they would have their Druid burn them in a sacred bonfire to appease their Gods with a prosperous new year.

Throughout the festivities the Celts would wear lavish costumes made of animal skins and parts. Read the rest of this entry »

Halloween Spirit

As we transition from the growth and life of spring and summer into the death and resting of the land through fall and winter, October 31st marks the change from one to the other. Known as Halloween, it is traditionally the night when the veil between the living and the dead becomes paper thin and who knows what will pass through it.
